With only 5% share in the total water body of the earth, fresh water is a rare commodity today. Equitable and sustainable management of this rare resource is thus, a major global challenge. Preserving the quality and availability of fresh water therefore, has become the most pressing of all environmental challenges today. Perhaps, because water is a perceived cheap and readily available resource, often we fail to realise how much stress human demands for water create on natural ecosystems.
The situation thus demands an urgent need to bring a shift in our attitude towards water quality and conservation. While considerable steps have been initiated in this direction across the world, there are still around 1.2 billion people in the world using potentially unsafe water supplies, out of which two third live in Asia. To have some idea of its enormity, this additional coverage of 1.2 billion equates to establishing new water supply services everyday until 2015.
